Perfect!

We found the most perfect premises for our recycling operation Green Fox. Maybe it doesn't look like much on the photograph but it really is ideal. It has so much potential and is perfectly located. It also has a very positive energy feeling to it. And we can use it for free for a couple of months! But then we will have to decide: are we going for it all the way and rent it which means we have to do some serious fundraising. Of course it depends on how our project will be received. Well, we'll know that very soon.

It has been over a month since I first wrote about our ambitious plan for the recycling of waterbottles. Since then we have been very busy with planning and now we are finally coming to the really scary bit.

We introduced the Green Fox to the island. He will be our trademark and sign for our recycling plan. The idea of creating a mystery around the arrival of the green fox on the island has worked amazingly well. Nobody really knows exactly what it is all about and guesses and speculations of the wildest sort are coming to our ears.

In 10 days we will have to have our presentation ready and our plans more finalized so we can present it to the local population.

We will have to explain the importance of at least giving it a try and of starting on a small basis. With their help and support this can turn into something really special.

I am very excited about the whole project but also very anxious about the confrontation next week.

Tuesday through the window

The difference between last weeks picture and this one is about 20 degrees! Last week I was seriously considering a swim (didn't go) and today I was looking for my woolly gloves (couldn't find). Christmas ornaments are out and the tree is up. I dare say we have the most kitsch tree on the island .... but I love it. It is full of the ornaments we collected over the last 20 years. Many of them handmade. No trendy tree in our house. If you think you can handle it.....here is a (again not so clear) picture I just took:

Fireplace and candles are burning, it is a cosy time of the year. Also a very busy time. This weekend we have the annual Christmasbazaar. Our women's club started it more than 20 years ago and now it is a major event which everybody enjoys very much. There will be gluhwein and handmade wreaths and ornaments, cooky baking, crafting and much more.

It is time

I am so lucky to live on this beautiful island that I call my home for 26 years now. It is not always easy; living on a small island has its restrictions but we are compensated so much with the beautiful nature and a quality of life that I know a lot of people are dreaming about.

One very important thing though is missing and that is the possiblity of recycling. It hurts me so much to know that we produce so much rubbish and it all ends up in a landfill. And I have to admit I am as active in filling this landfill as any one else. The term recycling comes up all the time, it is used in election speeches and in many more occasions. But nothing happens.

But now
It is time

Our women's group has decided to actually do something about it because it is time.

We will start small but our goals are big.

And it is all happening now.
I am actually quite excited because I know we can make it work. The reason I post it here today is that it feels like a commitment. I just want the world to know that we are going for it. And if there is anybody out there that has any tips or information or whatever....................................we still have a lot to learn.

Our plan is to start with collecting the waterbottles, of which we use thousands. But this is only the beginning.

Yes, it is happening and it is time!

A morning well spent

Well, today was our clubs turn for clean up duty. It was a beautiful morning with blue skies and plenty of sunshine. The wind was still a bit chilly though. Perfect weather to be spending some time on the beach.

There was a lot of driftwood and plastic that the sea had thrown on the beach but I have to admit that there was also too much rubbish that people had just thrown down the slope. We picked up al sorts of things: little children-bicyles, some engines, half a motorbike, a pram, a broken woodstove, plastic chairs and more.

At least we were having some fun with our found treasures

But..........................................................................................................................................................

When will we learn to give this beautiful environment the respect it deserves and not just throw all our unwanted stuff in the bushes where nobody can see it?!

I suppose it will be little steps at the time and we just must never give up trying.
